How to purge or clean up you Gmail inbox

How to purge or delete email messages from GMail inbox

I’ve been looking online for a good solution, but I couldn’t find. Or so I thought.

I admit my Gmail inbox was a little out of control. I need a way to purge or clean up my GMail inbox.  Admittedly I had thousands of unread messages and it was driving me crazy.

Before Gmail I used Outlook or Thunderbird as my email client. Gmail doesn’t have the capabilities to sort  alphabetically or by date. The labels system is good but not when you want delete thousands of unwanted emails.

So here’s what worked for me.

Use this method at your own risk. Please double check which emails your are deleting. This process will permanently delete them.

  1. Install Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client. ( This should also work with outlook, but I didn’t try it.
  2. Create a label in GMail.  Name it something memorable. I named mine “trachola”. Don’t use Junk or Trash. Something odd ball. This will be the label your unwanted emails with have.
  3. In Thunderbird set up your a new mail account. This will be your GMail account information.
  4. Once your set up is done. Thunderbird will start downloading all of your GMail inbox messages. This might take a while.
  5. Your should see your GMail labels on the left as folders in Thunderbird. The label you created in GMail for your unwanted emails should be there too.
  6. Sort your email in Thunderbird by subject, alphabetically, by date or how every you want to sort them.
  7. In Thunderbird, highlight and drag any unwanted emails to that special folder that corresponds to the Gmail label for unwanted emails.
  8. You can ctrl click or click and Shift click the last email to highlight many of them at once.
  9. Once all of your unwanted emails are in the unwanted email folder go back to Gmail in your web browser. Refresh your browser and you should see all of the unwanted emails under that special label you created.
  10. (Caution: This final step will delete them permanently) Highlight them all and delete. Now go to trash folder. Highlight them all again and delete. This will be permanently deleted them once and for all.
